SUMMARY:International Course On Plant Genetic Resources And Resilient Seed Systems For Sustainable Food Security
DESCRIPTION:Training Date: 23 October-10 November 2017\nVenue: Pokhara\, Nepal \n  \nLoss of plant genetic resources from agriculture production system and impact of climate change has resulted in major concerns about global food and nutrition security. Community Biodiversity Management (CBM) emerged as successful participatory strategy to realize on-farm management of plant genetic resources and strengthening the farmers’ seed systems. CBM distinguishes itself from other strategies because of its focus on the process of enabling farming communities to increase the access\, availability and use of genetic resources and quality seed of superior varieties. In addition\, CBM has the potential attributes to enhance the resilience of farming communities in responding to change by enhancing social interdependence\, collaboration\, adaptability and autonomy. \nWhilst this strategy for managing agrobiodiversity and seed systems is becoming increasingly adopted by NGOs\, further mainstreaming within national PGR and seed sector development programme is needed. The objective of the training is to enhance participants’ capabilities to use CBM as integrated strategies for managing genetic resources\, seed systems and promoting community resilience towards change. The training focuses on the following topics: \n\nContemporary approaches in agrobiodiversity management for food and nutrition security;\nStrengthening the seed systems to increase the access\, availability and use of high quality seed of superior varieties  by small-holder farmers;\nScaling successful participatory practices (e.g. community seed bank\,  diversity seed kit\, seed fair\, participatory plant breeding\, participatory variety selection\, community based seed production\, social seed network\, crowd sourcing of superior varieties\, value addition and market linkages of orphans crops);\nCommunity based adaptation to climate change;\nParticipatory learning and action research;\nEnabling PGR and seed policies – CBD-Nagoya Protocol on ABS\, IT-PGRFA (Farmers’ Rights\, Multilateral system\, Benefit sharing); Intellectual Property Rights (UPOV\, WTO-TRIPS)\, and\nPutting policies into practices and programmes- a global outlook on successful mechanisms and initiatives\n\nThis training programme is organized in Pokhara\, Nepal. ‘Pokhara is one of the most beautiful cities of Nepal with majestic view of Himalaya surrounded by rich biodiversity landscapes\, and part of the Ramsar site for wetland conservation’. The training includes field work in LI-BIRD project sites. The course concludes with a design exercise for transforming lessons learnt into strategic action plans\, in which participants integrate CBM and community resilience in practice. \nPlease download a detailed brochure on the course focus\, objectives\, target group and further information. \nPlease make use of this unique training opportunity to interact with peers in your field of expertise and interest from all over the world! \nTraining Date: 23 October-10 November 2017\nVenue: Pokhara\, Nepal

SUMMARY:Short Course on Result-based Monitoring and Evaluation (RbM&E)
DESCRIPTION:  \nIntroduction\nHave your organizations truly delivered the promises made to their stakeholders? Have your plans\, programs and policies produced the intended results? These are the questions frequently asked by the stakeholders during meetings and workshops. \nWith the advent of globalization\, there is also a growing pressure to both the governments and civil society organizations around the world to be more responsive to the demands of a wide range of stakeholders for good governance\, accountability and transparency. It is not enough to simply implement programs and assume that the job is over. One must track progress against planned tasks and examine their outcomes and impacts at a scale that determines the success or failure of that program\, and which are only acquired through effective Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) plan. \nMonitoring and evaluation (M&E) is evolving through continuous work in progress from traditional method to new result-based approaches. The latter has helped to answer “so what” question\, and respond to stakeholders’ growing demand for results. The introduction of result based M&E system takes decision makers one step further in assessing whether and how goals are being achieved over time. It is a powerful management tool that can be used to improve the way of planning\, budgeting and executing programmes and or activities for achieving intended results. It provides a continuous flow of information feedback into the system.  When implemented it properly can help guide managers or decision makers to overcoming obstacles in the ongoing program and achieving the desired outcomes on time. \nCourse Objective and Expected Outcomes\nThis course is aimed to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to collect\, tabulate and interpret data in an organized manner which will guide management decisions to take action against planned programs for their effective implementation. \nAfter the completion of this course\, participants will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the concept\, purpose and types of M&E frameworks\nIdentify tools and techniques to measure and report progress\nUndertake a problem analysis and determine relevant indicators & data necessary for M&E\nTrack progress\, discover unplanned effects and judge the impact at scale\nFamiliarize with the application of mobile apps based technology in result based M&E\nUnderstand the use of M&E results and give feedback in order to improve management performance and evidence based decision making\nFinally\, prepare for and implement result based M&E process\n\nCourse Content\nThis course will cover the following key components: \n\nConcept and types of M&E frameworks\nTools and techniques of M&E\nTheory of change and problem analysis\nUnderstanding MEAL and setting indicators\nUnderstanding result based M&E\nData collection and analysis for M&E reporting\nApplication of mobile apps in result based M&E\nMeasuring and interpreting results\nUse of M&E results\nReporting results and giving feedback\n\nTarget Participants & Eligibility\nThis course is specially designed for M&E Officers\, project planners\, managers\, analysts and anyone interested to improve their skills on monitoring and evaluation.
